What’s your burning question about coaching groups? (Win a prize!)

August 8, 2013

Woman throwing money in the airYou might be wondering why I’m asking this question.  Here are some reasons:

  1. I’m a psychologist who ran therapy groups for years.
  2. I was an active member of the American Group Psychotherapy Association for years.
  3. I ran coaching groups for years.
  4. I’ve been in all kinds of groups, both good and bad.
  5. Finish Agent is software that lets you run groups, membership sites, or masterminds online.

And the final reason is that I have hereby dubbed myself the  “Group Guru.”  I will be running a telesummit on group coaching in late October (October 28 – Nov.1, tentatively) and then teaching a class on the same subject.

It’s one thing for me to know something, it’s another thing to find out what YOU want to know.  I need to know what’s missing for YOU!

My somewhat biased point of view is; why wouldn’t you run groups?  It’s beneficial to your clients, and it’s an obvious way to leverage your time and make more money.  There are so many advantages to running groups, that you need a good reason not to run them.

I’ve decided that the reasons that people don’t run coaching groups must be along the lines of:

  1. I don’t have enough people on my list or enough contacts.
  2. I don’t know how to run groups.
  3. I don’t know what group to run.
  4. I don’t know the logistics of running groups.
  5. I don’t know how to market my groups.
  6. I don’t know how to keep filling my groups.
  7. My area of genius must be delivered in a one-on-one fashion.
  8. I don’t like groups.

I’m sure there are other reasons.  I want to help you, by giving you the answers about group coaching that you need. So whether you are a beginner or a seasoned veteran, please fill out my simple 3-question survey:

  1. Hi Gina,

I just received an email from you with the subject line saying “Delbert, where do your clients go after they finish your coaching group”?

I would like to share with you a related personal experience that confirms the need to address your very question. Here is the story.

At one point, I owned a company in the Private Financial Investment business. Paid training seminars was one of the tools I used to find “co-op partners” to locate possible transactions in their geographic area. Only a few ever took action or did much with it as finders. But many more remained interested but did nothing except follow along and just dream.

I was shocked and upset to see that the latter group was buying up additional training materials, newsletters and other materials from my competition. Although they remained committed to me in many ways, I failed to supply them more opportunities to buy from me. And as you say, I didn’t “keep them on my campus.”

This is simply meant to confirm and endorse your premise. It is important to do what you are proposing.

  2. 1.I wouldn’t have the slightest idea of where to start even..running a group means what? Do I lecture, motivate, give tools, teach on the different or same subject every time…
Does running a group mean a support group where every body shares, is it discussions or do people only listen to me…?
I’m guessing I could choose whatever I want it to be, but wouldn’t know how to market it either!
I hope my questions help you here.
Good luck on your research 🙂

    • Hi Sun, I really appreciate your posting your responses. I do particularly want to talk to people who have no idea about group coaching. I’m noting that you’re wondering how to define what a coaching group is as opposed to a class. That is something I’m going to make sure everybody understands.

There’s no “better” way to do things, but it’s important to know what your clients’ goals are and whether your methodology will get them their. My goal is to have the telesummit showcase a number of experienced coaches who run all different kinds of groups, to get your wheels turning.

Your questions, including your comment on not knowing how to market groups, are encouraging to me that I’m on the right track!

      • Good stuff Gina! The survey really highlights the opportunity that is out there for group coaching.

What an opportunity you are providing in the Group Coaching Telesummit to highlight the advantages of group coaching for companies and organizations! The Telesummit can also expand the coaching skills of those who coach groups in the business arena.
