Get Rich Slowly and You’ll Get There Faster

A lot of innovative and highly effective ideas begin by turning ideas on their head.

Here is one of my favorites. Turn this:

  • “Get High End Clients and Make Big Money Fast!”

Into this:

  • “Offer Medium Price, High Value Services and Get Rich Slowly

Of course, everybody wants to get rich fast. But there is no free lunch. The “get rich slowly” route, is slow, but predictable, and leads to recurring income that can take you to retirement and beyond.

And what do I mean by “slowly?” I mean not overnight or next month, in some magical win-the-lottery way. I mean by building your business and over the months, adding more and more happy clients who stay with you. So within a couple of years, you can have significant predictable, recurring income.

Why shouldn’t we all try to get high-end clients?

  • It usually does NOT lead to success. I don’t know about you, but I have met many, many entrepreneurs who have gone the “high-end-client-big-money-fast” route, and who have given up.
  • They are hard to find and harder to contact. It’s hard to get high-end clients.
  • This is not an ideal market for an unknown. It’s certainly more difficult to sell to them when you’re new.
  • Your reach is limited. Fewer people hear your message and get results from your work.
  • This model doesn’t lead to predictable income. Your income usually sways way up or way down.

What if, instead, you could base your business on groups of clients all taking small daily steps towards their goals?

I know – it’s not flashy and it’s not sexy. And it may only attract savvy coaches who aren’t swayed by big promises that lead to disappointment.

But what is sexy is results! When your clients get actual results, they:

  1. Shout their happiness to the world. In my program, The Online Group Success System (TOGSS), in which clients work on their goals in Finish Agent (FA), a client recently wrote:

2. Continue to spend money on you! Yes, Client Retention is the new black! It’s quietly sexy, and results in collecting money without you having to constantly look for new prospects (of course, you do, but you’re not desperate). Here is an example:

o  I just gave a 6- week course for $997, in which 29 people participated. Starting Week 2, they logged their daily progress in Finish Agent.

o  At the end of Week 5, I offered a $97 per 4-week session continuity session.

o  Guess how many people, out of 29 participants, are now in my Finish Agent accountability, with automatic recurring payments every 4 weeks?

o  Enter your guess here: ____________________

o  Here’s the answer: 20! Yes, 2/3 of the participants signed up!

o  That’s almost $2000 in additional recurring monthly income. In the future, I can hire coaches (we already have 10 ready to be trained) to run these groups, and they can become ongoing sources of passive income.

Write down how many times you answered, “Yes.”

Scoring:

  • You must have answered, “Yes” to questions 1 through 3. If you have no coaching experience, don’t coach people with either Habit Change or Big Project goals, then you wouldn’t want to run an “Online Get-it-Done Coaching Group” or a “Habit-Building Also, if it makes no sense to break your clients’ goals into daily actions, then it wouldn’t work with this system.
  • If you answered Yes to at least 10 of the questions (including 1-3), then you are perfectly set to run Online Get-it-Done or Habit-Building Coaching Groups!
  • If you answered, “Yes” to 6-9 of the questions (including 1-3, then I would keep an open mind and keep reading this blog. Maybe this is the first time you’ve run into this point of view before, and you may need more time to realize that this may be the perfect way for you to help your clients achieve more and for you to make more money while you’re at it.

Online Group Coaching – Its Time Has Come!

In my discussions with people about the online group coaching that we do using our Finish Agent accountability software, they always ask instead, “But when do I do my phone coaching?”

Of course, people who license our software can coach however and whenever their hearts desire.

But the truth is, incredible progress occurs in online coaching as a result of the daily online discussions between the coach and the small group members.

In other words, online group coaching works!

But, as you probably know, every time some new invention appears, there are people who think it must be worse than what went before.

Some coaches who I explain online coaching to react as if I’m talking about some “new-fangled idea,” and others seem to ignore me as they continue to ask about where they put their content (tons of places in the site for content).

ARGH! There is power in online coaching!

Perhaps it’s hard for people to believe that by writing and reading, their clients can make changes within a coaching relationship. After all, there isn’t much information about online group coaching’s effectiveness.

Online coaching is like any innovation – it’s hard for people to accept or even understand the value of a new invention. You’ve heard about the people who laughed at the “horseless carriage,” right?

It’s actually fun to find quotes from people who disparage any new-fangled thing. Here are some cute ones:

“This `telephone’ has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a practical form of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us.”

Perhaps you, yourself, have had these kinds of testimonials from your phone or in-person coaching groups.

But keep in mind that in my groups, there were no weekly small group phone coaching calls. All the coaching was done online.

Why should you care? Well, you could do the same thing that I did to get 40 online grups going.  Think about it.

Here are some advantages of online group coaching:

  • You can serve more people
  • It’s highly effective in helping people change
  • You can offer a lower-fee, high value service
  • By serving more people, you can earn a LOT more money
  • It’s easy to train or certify other coaches to do the online coaching for you, leading to passive income

I could say a lot more, but I will just leave you with a more enlightened quote about accepting the possibility of the impossible.

Weekly Accountability is a Weak Technique

One of the main techniques that coaches in coaching groups, namely WEEKLY ACCOUNTABILITY, doesn’t work that well.

If you’re new to my “campus,” then you may not know that I’m a big proponent of providing DAILY ACCOUNTABILITY to your coaching clients.

That may sound ridiculously difficult for you to provide as a coach, but believe me it’s not.  I will explain more in my next post.

But first you must understand the problems with WEEKLY ACCOUNTABILITY.

Here is the typical coaching client, the day of the next WEEKLY group coaching session:

bed_and_clock_small“Argh!  Tonight’s my coaching group!  Where did I put that accountability form the coach told us to fill out? I don’t even remember what I committed to doing this week!

Oh, finally, I found it.  Uh oh, I committed to calling 3 prospects and writing two blog posts!  I haven’t done any of that!  Well, maybe I’ll start on the blog posts. I can’t think of anything to write about!  It’s too much pressure.  Well I’ll write any old thing so at least I can say I finished one.”

What happened here?

WEEKLY (and certainly MONTHLY) ACCOUNTABILITY doesn’t work well because:

1. Usually the tasks that people commit to doing are the very tasks that they have anxiety about implementing.

a. The coach rarely addresses the underlying anxiety
b. People need more hand holding and help because of this anxiety

2. It’s too easy to put off tasks until tomorrow.

3. It’s easy for the clients to forget what they committed to do.

4. People tend to plan implementing their big tasks in “binges.”

Here’s an example of a binge: “I committed to calling 10 prospects.  I’ll just sit down and call all of them on Friday afternoon.”

procrastination_chalkboard_smallWhen Friday rolls around: “OMG, 10 prospects!  I hate calling prospects.  I think I have to warm up by meeting a friend for a long lunch.”

Later:  “Oh, darn; it’s too late to call people, and besides nobody wants to be called on a Friday afternoon after 3:00.”

5. Binges cause procrastination, perfectionism and paralysis, in a vicious cycle.

6. People become overwhelmed when faced with a large task.  Coaches usually don’t help their clients, especially when they’re coaching groups, to break large tasks into smaller tasks.

DAILY ACCOUNTABILITY, if done right, can vastly improve your clients’ results.  That will be the subject of my next blog post.

Portion control in coaching programs — why your clients don’t do the work

As you may know, I recently surveyed coaches and other change agents about their own consumption of coaching programs. 45 people have now responded to the survey (It’s not too late for you to take the survey: click here for the link.)

Let’s look at the response to the question, “Have you ever bought a program and never listened to or read the content?

The large majority buy programs, but don’t consume! My guess is that they “peek inside” and get overwhelmed.

There are probably many reasons why our coaching programs are, to coin a phrase, “underconsumed.” As you saw above, 82.22% of 45 people admitted that they had bought a program of some kind and never used it at all.

But from pre-interviewing experts for my upcoming virtual event, the Second Annual Group Coaching Megasummit: Create Communities that Bring Transformation to Your Clients and Big Money to You (feel free to preregister), I’ve heard certain themes from the most experienced coaches. I’m going to explore one today.

Most coaches who offer coaching groups are excited to share all that they know. And they want to give great value to their clients.

Which is wonderful.

Burger and FriesDo you know about that American belief that a restaurant that serves gigantic servings (that no one person could possibly eat) is giving great value? People from other continents gawk in horror at our portion sizes, but we are proud of the value we are getting.

Unfortunately, many coaches also believe that the more information they give in their coaching programs, the higher value their program will have. Doubly unfortunately, consumers of these coaching products have the same belief.

Change agents have their clients needs in mind — they are excited to share all that they know. And they want to give great value to their clients.

But they are not informed about what actually works. As coaches, we should be concerned about the client’s actual behavior. And it’s clear that if the behavior is to not even unwrap the packaging on your course, then there will be no positive behavior change.

Experienced coaches have found time and time again that by giving less information in each lesson or group session, they are actually giving more. The fact is that the mind can only take in so much new information at once. And when your brain gets overwhelmed, you stop taking in information at all.

A kind of paralysis takes hold when you can’t take in more information. Your brain is yelling, “NO! No more!” You feel terrible. And you want to avoid feeling like that. What’s the way to avoid? Never open that package again.

Teachers and professors have known that you shouldn’t “feed from a firehose” for decades. That’s why there are classroom activities, projects, professors asking students to work in groups, asking and answering questions in class, etc. This gives the student time to pause and to deepen the learning by using multiple modalities.

Our brains need time, repetition, practice, deeper processing, and the ability to look at what’s being taught from different angles.

We also need to have the information given to us in tiny, easily digestible steps.

I would like to see the coaching community embrace the idea that coaching is all about the client getting results. If they get this, then they can educate their audience that the value lies in what you will do as a coach to get them there. The value in the coaching is not in how many words are recorded or written and handed over to them.

Survey Results: Are People Wasting Money on Coaching Programs?

In my last blog post, I asked you to fill out my survey, called “You Can Lead a Horse to Water.”  I’m so pleased that 38 of you have answered the 5 simple questions so far.

If you’re reading this and have not yet taken the survey, then please go there RIGHT NOW, and weigh in on this important subject with your answers, before you read this post.

The more people who answer the survey, the more powerful the results will be!

Here’s what the survey shows.  There were 5 questions, so I’ll give you the results, questions by question.  In all cases when I quote numbers, I’ve rounded them to the closest whole number.  I find the data easier to digest that way.

Again, there were 38 respondents to this survey so far.

 

Survey Question 1:

Have you ever bought a program and never listened to or read the content?
  • 80% responded “Yes”
  • 20% responded “No”

What does this tell us?  For one thing, the fact that 80% of intelligent (they must be intelligent; they’re change agents!) people spend money on something they highly value, and then NEVER make use of it!

This is the exact figure that’s been quoted by others, without any reference or citation.  Now I’ve “scientifically” shown that this is true!

 

Survey Question 2:

How many programs do you estimate you started but never finished?
Out of 38 people:
  • 28 answered —  3 or more programs started but not finished
  • 20 answered —  5 or more programs started but not finished
  • 10 answered — 10 or more programs started but not finished!

So more than 25% of coaches and other change agents who took this survey have invested in 10 or more courses or programs, and never finished them!

This tells me that the coaching and training service industries have a problem.  That problem is called “CLIENT RETENTION.”  The longer a client or student stays with you, the more they learn, and the more they refer other clients to you.  If you lose them, who knows where they’ll go?

 

Survey Question 3:

How much money do you estimate you’ve wasted in this way?
  • 16% responded — $0-$100 wasted on unused programs
  • 16% responded –$100-$500 wasted on unused programs
  • 68% responded — OVER $1000 wasted on unused programs

Let me repeat, a whopping 68% estimate they have wasted more than $1000 in this way!  As one person wrote, “Most of the programs I purchased were in the $97 to $197 range but there was one I purchased for $750 that I never touched and that one bums me out the most. A BIG investment I could ill afford.”

But that’s not all.

One person wrote that they have lost over $75,000 by buying programs they didn’t make use of.

Another person wrote “$20,000+  shocking.”

 

Survey Question 4:

Have you ever noticed people not utilizing YOUR programs?
  • 80% yes  (78.95%)
  • 20% no  (21.05%)

Notice that these are the same percentages that we found in Question 1, which was:  Have you ever bought a program and never listened to or read the content?

  • 80% responded “Yes”
  • 20% responded “No”

I love when data is consistent.  (Any scientists reading this, I’m aware of the confounding variables.)  So a little more evidence that 80% of people don’t make full use of the programs they buy.

 

Survey Question #5

When you run a program, what percent of people do you estimate you lose during the program, or never hear from after they purchase? Please type in a percentage number (e.g. 25%)

Woman Thumbs DownAnswers range widely from 2% to 90%.  A few said they had not run programs or had run very few programs.

  • 20 responded that they lose 20% or more of their people
  • 10 responded that they lose 50% or more
  • 4 responded that they lose 70% or more

 

What do these results mean?

The big message from this data is that we’re not focusing enough on client retention. Therefore, we’re not retaining our clients long enough.  A majority of them are leaving and not coming back.  They never learn anything from us because they don’t even know the information we’re teaching.  And they are not getting the benefits and transformations that they wanted when they invested in our programs.

This is bad news from a business point of view.  It’s easier to keep clients than to get new ones.  Yet clearly we’re operating from a different principle — constantly filling the pipeline and then the funnel, and not focusing on keeping the clients we do have from dropping right out of the funnel.

I’ll be exploring what we can do about this problem in later blog posts.  But being aware that you are “losing” clients in this way is the first step.

You Can Lead a Horse to Water — Do Your Clients Do the Work?

Do your clients do the work, or do you teach/coach them and they do nothing?It’s often said that 80% of people who pay for your expertise fall off the wagon at some point along the way, and never see the results they wanted for themselves.

This is especially a problem in group coaching, such as in a multi-week or multi-month teleseminar series.

I don’t know how many wonderful programs I’ve bought and then I’ve NEVER even opened them.  It’s been called the “Dirty Little Secret” of the expert training industry.

It’s not clear, though, where these percentages come from.  I’ve searched and can’t find any real data.  So I’ve decided to conduct a non-scientific, but hopefully eye-opening survey, in order to find out what percentage of people have experienced this phenomenon, either as a coach/teacher, or as a client.  I think the results will be fascinating, and will give us more information than is widely available.

Once they know the answer, they’re more ready to invest in our service.

Over the years, I’ve given a lot of thought to wiify.  What’s in it for you, my loyal tribe?
What do I offer you?

I want to help you earn recurring and passive income by building your business to the point that you can run online groups!

[And furthermore, I want you to have so much passive income that we can have a big celebration at an ancient palazzo in Italy.]

But …

Most of my readers aren’t ready to run online groups.

So my goal is to help you build your business.  My blog posts help you do that, always with an eye on eventually going big with groups, whether they are teleseminars, coaching groups, or a membership site.

Believe it or not, your knowledge and attitude about running coaching groups will affect how you build your business and what kind of clients you attract.  If you wake up one day and say, “Oh!  Maybe I should run a group!” then you won’t have prepared your tribe to value groups.
